Tell us a bit about yourself

“My name is Martina and I am from the Czech Republic. I was Au Pair in America in Colorado in 2021-2023, I took care of two amazing boys (9 and 11 years old).

From elementary school, I knew I wanted to work with kids, so that’s why I decided to study pedagogy in high school. That is where I first heard about Au Pair in America. I remember it just like it was yesterday, listening to a girl talk about her experience in the USA: traveling across the states, making lifelong friends, experiencing a new culture, and how much fun she had with her children and host family.

At that moment, it was like I had been struck by lightning. I wanted this combination of work and travel. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and escape the fear of COVID. This felt like both my escape ticket and the challenge I needed in my life.

When I came back to the Czech Republic, I became a teacher at an elementary school, teaching art and crafts. In the afternoons, I also run an after-school club, where I prepare games and arts and crafts for the kids, helping them enjoy their free time activities.”

Why did you want to become an Au Pair?

“Being an Au Pair helped me gain more and more passion for working with children, and it led me to become more confident in myself and in my work as a teacher.

I always love to share my memories from being an Au Pair because they are forever. I have so many to share, like when I flew over New York City in a helicopter, saw the sunrise in Maui at Haleakalā, spent a solo travel month from NYC to New Orleans, and, most memorably, went on a road trip through New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah with my host family, my family from the Czech Republic, and some friends.”

Tell us one of your favourite memory from your time away?

“My parents came to visit me in Colorado, and my host mom and I planned a road trip for them. We visited famous national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and more! Even though it was July and incredibly hot, we were excited the whole time—we had so much fun!

I just love remembering this experience of connecting my family with my host family. I truly felt that I had found my second family, my second home, and that they had my back.”
