Paula, a former Au Pair from a little village closed to Granada (Andalucia, Spain) which is called Alhendin, reflects on her unforgettable year in Frisco, Texas, and the incredible impact it had on her life and how it led to her future career. Now finishing her Master’s degree on Clinical Translation in order to be a translator in a hospital.

“My name is Paula Perez, I was an Au Pair in America during 2017, when I was 20/21 years old. I lived in Frisco, Texas. I was an Au Pair of 2 kids, Mary (5) and Brit (3).  When I decided to be an Au Pair I had just finished my 2nd year at University where my major was English Literature. I liked what I was studying but I didn’t know if I wanted to keep going with or if it would be better to change paths. That year abroad made me realise that I definitely needed to finish my degree to then specialize on what I discovered to be my passion, that is helping people through Language. I’m doing my Master’s degree now on Clinical Translation in order to be a translator in a hospital for those who don’t speak/understand Spanish, English and or French.

In the meantime, as a way of paying my master’s I’m a receptionist at a Student’s Residence, where university students stay for 2 to 3 years until they finish their first 2 years of College. The Residence name is “Livensa Living Granada Cartuja”. It is actually like a hotel for students, they have a pool, gym, libraries, rock wall, common areas, audiovisual facilities (where they can play video games, darts, watching Netflix etc.) and a huge rooftop. They also get cooking classes, a personal trainer, first aid courses, and they get their rooms cleaned once a week!

Specifically, my job is to welcome the new students, I do visits for potential new students and I need to be there for them in case they need me or in case of an emergency.

Furthermore, that year with this incredible family made me discover who I was and that I could do whatever I wanted to do. They encouraged me to finish what I was doing and they helped me to believe more in myself. They were not just a family I lived with but MY family, I felt at home and I will never thank them enough for what they did for me.

I still talk to them, but sadly not as much as I’d like to.. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them again.”

In conclusion, the journey of being an au pair transcends the confines of a temporary role. It’s an enriching adventure that leaves an indelible mark on your life, shaping not only your present but also your future. Embrace the lessons learned, cherish the memories made, and carry forward the newfound skills and perspectives into the next chapter of your journey.
