Tell us a bit about yourself
“My name is Martina and I am from the Czech Republic. I was Au Pair in America in Colorado in 2021-2023, I took care of two amazing boys (9 and 11 years old).
From Elementary School, I knew I wanted to work with kids so that’s why I decided to study Pedagogy at High School and that is where I heard about Au Pair in America. I remember just like it was yesterday, when I was listening a girl who was talking about her experience in the USA: traveling the states, lifetime friends, new culture and how she had so much fun with her children and her host family.
At that time, it was like I got struck by lightning. I wanted this combination of work and travel, I wanted to get away from the comfort zone and from the Covid fear, so this was like my escape ticket and challenge I needed in my life.
When I came to the back to the Czech Republic, I became a teacher at Elementary School, teaching art and crafts, also in the afternoon I have an after “school club” where I prepare games and art and crafts for the kids, just enjoy their free time activities.”
Why did you want to become an Au Pair?
“Being an Au Pair helped me gain more and more passion for working with children and it led me to be more confident in myself and in that work as a teacher.
I always love to share my memories from being an Au Pair, because they are forever. I have so many to share, like when I flew over New York City in a helicopter, saw the sunrise in Maui in Haleakala, my solo travel month from NYC to New Orleans and my biggest memory is road trip through New Mexico, Arizona and Utah with my host family, family from Czech and some friends.”
Tell us one of your favourite memory from your time away?
“My parents came to visit me in Colorado and me and my host mom planned a road trip for them. We visited famous National Parks, such as, the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and more! Even though it was July and it was hot, we really were excited the whole time, we had so much fun! I just love remembering this memory of connecting my family with my host family, I really felt that I found my second family, second home and that they have mine and my family’s back.”
