Hi Guys, I’m Olyvia, an au pair from South Africa. I have been an au pair for 18 months now and I can confidently say that it’s been the best experience ever, thanks to the best host family ever.

Since the moment I arrived at the Collins’ in Minnesota, I knew that this was where I belonged. Jason and Alyssa made me feel comfortable and welcome right from the start and I got along with all 4 of their children almost immediately. Since then, I’ve felt like a part of their family. My host parents are always sure to include me in family activities, outings, vacations and events. They’ve always gone out of their way to get to know me better, to make sure that I’m happy and show that I am valued. They’ve always been understanding about how challenging the life as an au pair can be. Being away from your whole entire family is the hardest thing ever, especially at such a young age. But if you take the time to match with a family that you feel is perfect, it makes it 1 million times easier.

Both my host parents are awesome, and it reflects in each and every single one of their kids. They’re loving, and compassionate and sometimes a little crazy, but I wouldn’t change a single thing.
MY HOST FAMILY OF THE YEAR
Au Pair in America has an ‘Au Pair of the Year’ award and it made me realize that, as important as it is to show au pairs that they are valued and appreciated. Host families should be recognized too. I wondered if they had a ‘host family of the year’ award because if they did, I would nominate my host family in a heartbeat! I’ve tried, but I can’t think of a way to show my host family just how much they mean to me. Nothing is enough. They deserve more recognition, which is one of the reasons I decided to write this blog post. One day I’ll find away, even if it’s 15 years from now.

TIME FLIES
I have six months left with my host family and I can’t bear the thought of having to go. It’s like leaving home all over again, only harder. As much as I dislike the cold, I’m going to miss the snow. I’m going to miss cute giggles from my host kids, my host dad‘s plans and silly jokes and my host moms hugs.
In six months I’ll have to say goodbye to the best host family in the world. But my heart will be full of love, memories and a whole lot of happiness. Because I took a chance, and traveled 9000 miles to the Unknown. Which turned out to be the best decision of my life and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
