Devonia from Port Elizabeth, South Africa reflects on her experience as an au pair over the last 10 months.
We absolutely LOVE hearing from au pairs after they’ve arrived in the USA to start their au pair adventures. It makes us so happy to hear what they’ve been up to and how much they are enjoying life in the USA. Devonia from South Africa got in touch with us to share her au pair experience. Here’s what she had to say:
“If you told me a few years back, that I’d be living in DC/Virginia, with a beautiful host family, making unforgettable memories each day, I would probably look at you in complete disbelief, then with a deep desire, wishing it to be true. I’ve been living in the States for approximately 10 months and I have no regrets. I have become family with not only my hosts, but with people from different nationalities, and I feel like I have a home in every continent, all across the world. In just these few months I had the opportunity to travel to the different states with friends, as well as a solo trip to Paris for one week vacation. Travelling makes your realize so much about yourself, and it brings about great maturity, if you let it. You learn a lot from everyone you encounter and every experience you’re able to have. For me personally, this has been such a humbling experience and is more than being an au pair, student or traveler; it has been a journey of self-discovery and independence. I would encourage everyone who has a passion for children, along with the desire to travel and experience the American culture, to not waste another moment but rather grab this opportunity with both hands.
It might seem like a scary thing to do and it probably is, as it was for me, but as the saying goes, “if your vision for your life does not scare you, perhaps it is not big enough”.
